Student consistently and easily understands and produces a variety of English utterances. He/she can initiate, carry, and close a basic conversation. He/she can express simple thoughts and opinions using complete sentences. The student¡¯s vocabulary is limited, but sufficient to survive in most everyday situations. The student¡¯s understanding of grammar is basic and contains few errors which interfere with overall communication.

The student¡¯s understanding of grammar is basic but sufficient. The student understands the structure of the past, present, and future tenses and the structure of questions.

The student¡¯s understanding of grammar is basic and limited to the immediate past, present, and future.

The student¡¯s vocabulary is limited and is sufficient for responding to questions about time and purpose and for responding appropriately in simple everyday social situations.

Student can talk about an object or picture with several words or a sentence. He/she can also understand easy and basic everyday conversations and make simple expressions about his/her needs, likes, and dislikes. The student¡¯s vocabulary is sufficient for handling simple interactions, but he/she may not respond appropriately to questions that are not about the here and now. The student has a very limited understanding of grammar.
High Elementary

The student¡¯s vocabulary is very basic and the student has almost no understanding of grammar.
Elementary

There is almost no communicative ability and no understanding of grammar.
